A massive fire broke out in a four-story building in West Delhi tonight and claimed the lives of several people. So far 27 bodies have been recovered, police fear the number will rise. Officials said an entire floor of the building had yet to be searched. The fire has been extinguished and the focus is now on rescue operations.
More than 40 people suffered burns and were hospitalized. About 60 to 70 people were rescued from the building, police said.
“It was a raid and a CCTV office. We have been searching ever since. People said many were trapped inside,” said Sunil Chaudhary, Delhi’s deputy fire chief.
The commercial building – which mainly housed offices – is located near the Mundka metro station in West Delhi. According to fire officials, information about the fire was received at 4:40 p.m., after which 20 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, news agency ANI reported.
The fire started on the first floor of the building, which houses the office of a CCTV camera and router manufacturing company, Deputy Police Commissioner (External) Sameer Sharma said.
“Extremely saddened by the loss of life due to a tragic fire in Delhi. My heart goes out to the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.

The Prime Minister said that Rs. 2 lakh each will be donated to the families of those who lost their lives. The injured will receive Rs. 50,000, his office tweeted.
