According to Peter Sun, president of the Madang Chinese community, Chinese stores in Madang will be closed for three days.
Sun said the store closures were linked to the loss of fellow countryman Weng Yanqing, as well as the first anniversary of the death of the country’s founding father, Great Chief Sir Michael Somare. They will open after Monday 28and February.
The Chinese community who also met with Madang’s outgoing PPC, Acting Superintendent Mazuc Rubiang, and asked the police to quickly arrest the suspects involved. Sun said the body of the late Weng, 41, from China’s Fujian province, was airlifted to Port Moresby this morning to be placed in the funeral home.
It was a sad morning for the Chinese community at Madang Airport as they bid farewell to the late Weng.
Rubiang and Madang Police Rural Commander Inspector Patrick Wallis assured the Chinese community that police were working around the clock to identify the shooter.
He also assured them that he would inform the new PPC and ensure that the suspects were arrested and prosecuted.
“I am sorry for what happened and I assure you that the suspects will face what they have done. I have (have) hired the police and they are investigating the matter. I will need your help in getting information about what really happened so that the police will use it to investigate the case,” Rubiang told the Chinese community.
