Dakshina Kannada MP says century-old building inadequate to handle growing number of trains as well as passengers
Dakshina Kannada MP and State BJP Chairman Nalin Kumar Kateel urged Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnav to construct a spacious new building meeting international standards for Mangaluru Central Station .
In a meeting with the minister in New Delhi on August 2, Mr Kateel said the century-old building is inadequate to handle the growing number of trains as well as passengers. The building lacks passenger amenities and has become inadequate, he said.
There was also a need to speed up the construction of new platforms and a supply line to make it easier to manage more trains, he told Vaishnav. Although funds were made available, the work did not gain momentum, he said.
Mangaluru Junction train station also lacks facilities, he told the minister and called for upgrading the station with modern amenities for passengers. The two stations are very busy and generate considerable revenue for the Railways, he said.
Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel presented a brief of demands to Union Minister of Railways Ashwini Vaishnav in New Delhi on August 2, 2021.
It also demanded the construction of a new four-track railway bridge over Vivekananda College Road, Nehru Nagar in Puttur, and an upper bridge in Meenakaliya, Baikampady, on the railway line leading to the new port of Mangalore.
He called for the reintroduction of the Mahalaxmi Express between Mangaluru and Miraj via Hassan, and the introduction of new trains from Mangaluru to Tirupati and Chennai, both via Hassan.
The MP called for the merger of Hassan-Mangalore Rail Development Corporation Ltd., which was founded to build a wide gauge line between Hassan and Mangaluru, with South Western Railway. He pointed out that the entity, a joint venture of Indian Railways and the Government of Karnataka, has achieved its goal.
