East Sepik Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Albert Beli said the late Kufai was attacked in his own home by a known suspect wielding a bush knife. Kufai is believed to have died of blood loss after the suspect severely cut his left leg. Police alleged Kufai’s attacker was intoxicated when he committed the crime.
PPC Beli said police are investigating the motive for the attack and death of the late Kufai. The incident was reported to police the same day and police have spoken to relatives. “The police then returned to the police station, made an entry in the event log and proceeded to take statements from any eyewitnesses. I still don’t understand why people still take other people’s lives while under the influence of alcohol. Since taking office in Wewak, I have been the victim of many alcohol-related murders. I want to call on the people of East Sepik not to drink and to approach them to solve this problem if you have problems with your loved ones or other people in the community. You will create a problem,” the PPC said.
PPC Beli added that since the alcohol ban in the province was lifted, people should drink responsibly.
He said: “We have received many reports of alcohol-related problems and that is not a good sign.”
