Agencies need to improve their digital footprint to stand out from competitors and appear more credible in the eyes of the consumer, delegates said at this year’s Hays Travel Independence Group conference in Tenerife.
“Take charge of your first impressions by claiming, personalizing and managing your Google profile,” said Natalie Buck, community marketing manager at Hays (left).
The agency’s Community Marketing Manager, Natalie Buck, and Marketing Manager, Sophie Tunnah, spoke to attendees Saturday, March 26, during a session titled, “You don’t have to spend a lot to get many”.
One profitable tool highlighted by the pair was Google My Business – a local SEO platform offered by the search engine that Buck described as “the modern Yellow Pages”.
“Take charge of first impressions by claiming, customizing and managing your Google profile,” Buck continued.
“Optimize your appearance in local search results and ensure information is accurate and engaging. The way people search is changing and people want to access information instantly, so you need to be there.
“[Google] is often the first thing customers notice when they search for your business, so be sure to make a positive first impression.”

According to Buck, clients are almost three times more likely to consider a reputable agency if they find a “complete business profile” on Google – which includes a verified location, hours of operation, photos, proof engagement with customers and contact details.
“If you don’t claim your business on Google, Google will often try to find the information on its own online and very often it’s incorrect,” she added.
“Request your profile, verify that you are the business owner, implement the correct information, and ultimately take control.”
A Hays Travel branch is said to have appeared in more than 8,500 searches over the past month, made up of people looking for the exact business and people looking for a travel agent near them. This led to 420 new requests.
Buck also highlighted the importance of a strong social media presence, describing it as a “key tool” that can help companies implement “a range of key goals”.
“It’s a fantastic tool for educating your audience about products and services they may not be aware of in a very cost effective way,” she added.
Tunnah further highlighted the importance of free online marketing training modules, such as the Fundamentals of Google’s Digital Marketing Program and Facebook Blueprint, a collection of over 90 modules on how to use the platform effectively. -form of social media.
